Do you have masonry work around your home? In many cases, this can add a lot of character to a home, but if it falls into disrepair, it doesn’t look well at all. Many times the problem is that it starts cracking, sometimes really making the masonry work fall apart. The major cause for damage to masonry is water. It can infiltrate through miniscule cracks and then expand when it freezes, making the situation worse. To prevent this from happening in the first place, there are a couple of things that you can do. It is very important to make sure that the area around your home is graded correctly. It needs to slope away from your home so that water doesn’t collect against the foundation. You can also use water repellent compound on the surface of the masonry to prevent water from entering it.
The one thing that you can’t prevent is old age causing the masonry work to break down and crack. When this is the case, repair might not be possible, and you would need to replace it instead.
